if you have a nice profile (with many pictures and most of the "more about me" questions answered), host families can see if you are a fit for them and can contact you via the messaging system.

But as there are many more au pairs than host families, it's probably a good idea to search for matching host families via the matching function and then contact them with a personal message, in which you explain why you think that you would be a good match especially for them (e.g. because their kids are in the age which you were used to look after back home,...). Don't just write standard messages (like "Hi, I'd like to be your next au pair") - most host families won't answer to messages like that.
