Irish Flag

The Irish Flag is based on the French tricolor flag. It was given constitutional status under the 1937 Constitution, which established the Republic of Ireland.

The green section symbolises the older majority Gaelic tradition of Ireland, mainly Roman Catholics. The orange section symbolises the mainly Protestant minority and the white section inbetween represents a lasting truce between the two cultures and living together in peace.

Harp

The harp is a symbol of the Irish State and is used by Government Departments and Offices. The harp also appears on all Irish coins.

St. Patrick's Day

March 17th is St. Patrick's Day and a National Holiday in Ireland. St. Patrick is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland and it is said that St. Patrick died March 17th. There are parades held in most towns in Ireland on that day. Many people wear a plant called shamrock  that day. The shamrock, even though not an official symbol of Ireland, is still a widely recognized symbol of Ireland.

Geography

Ireland is divided into 32 counties. Most people view themselves and others in terms of what part of Ireland they are from. The Republic of Ireland consists of 26 counties, Northern Ireland of six. Ireland is divided into the four provinces Connaught, Leinster, Munster and Ulster.
